Fernandez-Mendoza, Julio
I perform assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with a wide array of sleep disorders at Penn State Health Sleep Research & Treatment Center in Hershey, PA. Insomnia disorder and its cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT-I) is the main clinical patient population I serve, followed by nightmare, circadian and hypersomnia disorders, all of which can also be effectively treated with behavioral sleep medicine (BSM) principles and therapies. I provide clinical services to adolescents 13 years or older as well as adults 18 years or older, including older adults. My current research uses population-based and clinical trial designs and focuses on 1) the association of sleep health, particularly insomnia, short sleep duration, sleep apnea and circadian misalignment, with cardiometabolic, neurocognitive, and psychopathologic morbidity and mortality, 2) the natural history and trajectories of sleep phenotypes and EEG biomarkers across the lifespan, and 3) the effect of cognitive-behavioral vs. pharmacologic treatments on sleep and health-related outcomes.
